2015

PSSAG implemented fellowship program in Kayin State partnership with ActionAid Myanmar in 2015. Building social capital and strengthen human resources and the existing voluntary spirit in Kayin communities is a need for committed and aware young women and men from marginalized groups to emerge as leaders and to facilitate participatory, empowering development and peace building processes in their communities, as well as and positive engagement with state and non-state actors. Empowerment of young people who have potential and who are already involved in social development/social activism requires an institutional mechanism that can motivate, support and offer further training, and which can enable them to more systematically promote social change with their own communities. This project proposes the establishment of appropriate Community Fellowships for potential young leaders. Through intensive residential and field-based training and learning methodologies young people will take leadership and facilitating roles in the community to stimulate development and change for the communities they represent and the groups they work for. An underlying rationale for this approach is the belief that the formation of young leaders, community-based organizations and local NGOs are critical for the development of civil society and a participatory/democratic environment in Myanmar. It also realizes the vital role that young leaders from the various ethnic groups - as members and representatives of the wider society - can play in creating the realistic possibility of a unified Myanmar.
