2014

PSSAG implemented school renovation in 7 schools in Hpa-an Township of Kayin State as PSSAG’s very first project in 2014. The project activities were jointly implemented with FADV. Though the primary school enrollment rate in Kayin is comparable to the national average, almost 13 per cent of children still do not have access to primary education and only about half of all children attending primary school in the State complete their schooling on time. The project targeted the remoteness and known to be one of the hardest areas to get permission for implementing any kind of humanitarian activities. Education is not of priority to the people controlling the area. Hence schools are in very poor condition and the drop out rate is as high as 52%. Classroom has insufficient space and severely damaged school building discourage students from coming to schools. The burden of renovating the school falls majority on the parents, who even find it difficult to buy regular school supplies for their kids. As a result, number of out-of-school children are on the rise and they become child workers who are then vulnerable to different kinds of abuses and exploitation.
